Although you might think that Solar Power should be reserved for use in hot, sunny climates, a suitably designed Solar PV (electric) system will perform surprisingly well in the UK. Contrary to popular belief, Solar PV panels work best in cool clear conditions, so a climate that's hot and sunny may not produce as much power as you'd expect. Additionally, the UK is situated at higher latitudes than the Mediterranean, for example, and so the track of the sun across the sky forms more of an extended "arc" than in the lower latitudes of the Med. This is most noticeable in the summer months, when the sun only drops below the horizon for a few hours each night, giving up to 16 hours of daylight or more each day. During the winter months, the sun is only visible for around 8 hours. To optimise the production of power from a Solar PV system, a solar "tracker" should be incorporated. These devices allow the panels to "point" at the sun from first light, through to sunset. The net result of this "tracking" is that the Solar PV panels have the best possible chance of producing maximum power each day, even if the sun only appears from behind the clouds for a few hours. A "fixed" Solar PV system, like those normally fitted to the roof of a house/building, rely on the sun being visible for the 4 hour period surrounding midday. This restricts the chances of the PV array producing its optimum power output significantly. We will look for the optimum position on your site to place a solar tracking system, such that it is positioned away from "shadow sources" and other visual obstacles. The ideal "spot" may be tens of meters away from the nearest building, so the more open space your property has around it, the more options we'll have in choosing the ideal tracker location. We'll then assist you to install your tracker system, and will commission it when the work has been completed to the relevant standards. You will be able to negotiate a good "export" rate for any unused power produced from your system, as well as being able to sell ROCs (Renewable Obligations Certificates) to the energy industry each year. Call or email now to book your Site Survey. We cover South Scotland & the Southern Highlands. |
